(But first – I added a page to my header: 2016 Reading Challenge. As I post reviews for the books I am reading for the challenge – I will put the links there! I thought that the Pop Sugar Challenge would be good – as I sometimes get ‘stuck’ in a genre and need a push to step outside of my normal boundaries. Enjoy!)
Title: The Martian
Author: Andy Weir
Goodreads: The Martian
From the Book Depository: “I’m stranded on Mars. I have no way to communicate with Earth. I’m in a Habitat designed to last 31 days. If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So yeah. I’m screwed.”
I went into this read with doubts – While I’m big on science fiction, I was sure that this would be more on the science side and I would get bored. I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am incredibly glad I read it prior to watching the movie. Weir is amazing at pulling you into the loneliness of being the one single person left on a planet. As a self-proclaimed comedian, I found Watney’s humor and journal entries hilarious. If I was stuck on a planet alone, I would probably be making corny jokes to myself the entire time, so it all made a lot of sense to me.
You get pulled into his journey so deeply, you don’t want it to end, but you desperately want Watney to make it back to Earth. His counterparts in space and back home are also feeling this – and it really is like the whole Earth (and you!) are cheering him on. The science never got too boring – I was amazed by his ability to work out some of the situations in which he finds himself.
As a side note, the movie was pretty good. They, of course, had to take out some of plot points. Some of which I was excited to ‘watch’ unfold – but no such luck. And – they completely changed the ending – which was either really good (I was on the edge of my seat the entire time) or bad (because I was pissed they changed it).
Definitely! GO READ THIS NOW!
