(Spoiler Free) Sixteen year old Gemma seems to have her life figured out: beautiful, sweet, star of her high school’s swim team, falling in love with the cute boy next door. However, the arrival of Penn, Thea, and Lexi changes everything for Gemma. The series follows Gemma and her friends and family as they race against time to break the curse that looms over her.
This series wasn’t “can’t put it down” good, but overall I’d get it 3.5/5 stars. It was a fun, interesting series, that I would recommend to anyone that likes this genre – with the disclaimer that it is not the BEST thing that Hocking’s ever written. Sometimes, its nice to read a predictable series.
(Spoilers!) First of all, the Sirens are amazing villans. I found myself googling the bird form to see if anyone else depicted it how I imagined them in my head. There’s nothing better than a creature who is beautiful, alluring, and perfect on the outside – but deadly, evil, and ugly on the inside (or, you know, when they turn into giant, heart-eating birds).
I found it hard to get close to the characters in this series. While the POV switches between characters (which helps), the third person POV also kind of holds you at a distance from the characters. You know what they’re all fighting for, to free Gemma, but you never really get deep inside their feelings.
Out of all the relationships in the series – Harper and Daniel’s was my favorite. But, at the same time, once they got together – it was kind of boring. And when Alex & Gemma get back together – it seemed way too fake – I was literally waiting for him to try to kill her. (I thought that maybe Penn had put him under her spell or something). But, I also figured that would probably be too much of a twist, so wasn’t too surprised that it didn’t happen like that – instead he magically can resist the siren song…… ?
As I said in the beginning, despite the predictable read, it was still fun and interesting. I wouldn’t keep in on my bookshelf, but I’d definitely read it once!
